There are a number of different opportunities to be involved in virtual internship opportunities during the summer and winter breaks. Below are details on the providers that have been approved as Student Employability Centre (SEC) Internship opportunities, and details on the opportunities they offer.

4. Pagoda Projects: Remote Internships

Who are Pagoda Projects?

Pagoda Projects is going beyond work experience in the International Higher Education sector. We employ our own teams of professional & approachable people, across incredible destinations. We are ethical, ambitious and passionate about making unique opportunities accessible to people from all backgrounds.

What can I participate in?

Students can apply to complete a full-time remote internship across all sectors with one of our many partner companies in any of our host destinations which span Qingdao, Chengdu, Dalian, Zhuhai, Taipei, Ho Chi Minh City, Mexico City and Manchester. There is no need to commit or pay any deposit until we find you a placement you are happy with.

Our program consists of a guided, remote onboarding, with the full support of our teams. Students will embark on a virtual journey into the international workplace by completing valued tasks assigned by real companies, benefiting from the guidance and real-world experience of your company supervisor to enhance your technical and soft skills. We feel it’s important to ensure that you are exposed to the culture of your remote host company’s environment, which is delivered via a structured cultural mentorship and ongoing challenges and quizzes relating to your host company’s destination.

What are the aims, and what do they involve?

  • Meaningful work experience via a remote full-time internship, tasks are tracked via our system,
  • Minimum 30 hours of remote work experience per week,
  • Gain achievements by showing tasks that relate to the NACE core competencies that form career readiness,
  • Hands on supervision and support from the Pagoda Projects team, using various digital platforms,
  • Remote Placement via organic introduction to our partner companies,
  • Digital workshops focused on employability skills, featuring international experts across a range of sectors,
  • Cultural exchange and guidance via an assigned in-country cultural mentor,
  • Fun and exciting opportunities to engage in interpersonal quizzes, challenges and games,
  • Certificate upon completion relating to level of achievement, and
  • Post programme reflection activities and access to our alumni network for employment opportunities

Costs

AUD $1,500 + (AUD $300 refundable deposit) for UQ students who are successfully placed within a program. The deposit is fully refundable to students provided the terms of the placement agreement have been met.

UQ students must apply to both UQ and Pagoda Projects for participation with UQ rate. Otherwise the standard rate is GBP £1,495 (approx. AUD $2,700)

Grants

When you submit an internship application, you are automatically considered for either:

(1) New Colombo Plan (NCP) Mobility Funding of AUD $1,500. To be considered for the New Colombo Plan Mobility Funding, you must meet the funding criteria. This includes approval from your faculty to receive credit for your experience, which must be confirmed no later than 8 November 2020.

(2) Virtual Short-term Experiences Grant of AUD $750. To be considered you must have uploaded your Host Organisation Acceptance Letter no later than 8 November 2020.

There is no additional application required.

If you have already submitted an application for the Employability Grant for your internship, you will receive an email to advise that your application will be withdrawn and that you will be automatically considered for the short-term internship grant instead. Please note that you cannot receive two types of funding for the same experience.

Grants are limited and may be awarded by a selection committee on the basis of:

  • academic merit
  • academic progression as provided at the time of application
  • in consideration of other scholarships awarded to the student
  • applicants will be considered for only one grant from the Student Employability Centre per application round

This grant is not guaranteed even if all selection criteria are met.

Students who are due to graduate at the end of semester 2, 2020 will not be eligible for this grant.

Eligibility

To participate in a Pagoda Projects remote internship program, you must;
  1. Be actively enrolled into a UQ program and courses*,
  2. Not due to graduate at the end of the semester of application*,
  3. Have a minimum GPA of 4 and a record of steady academic achievement, and
  4. Meet all other criteria as outlined by the host organisation.

*Due to the evolving situation of COVID-19, students may be considered for participation in this program if they are not currently enrolled. Students who are due to graduate at the end of semester 2, 2020 are also eligible to apply, although they may not be eligible for UQ Insurance while undertaking their internship. These exceptions are for this round of applications only.

Credit for Internships

Some students may be able to receive credit towards their UQ program pending faculty approval. The Student Employability team is unable to provide further advice regarding internships for credit.
