Glossary of Terms
Over the course of your global experience journey, you are likely to encounter new terminology that is specific to your semester-based exchange, short-term experience or internship. A link to the full glossary of terms you may come across and their corresponding definitions can be found here.
Health and Safety During Your Experience
Health and Wellbeing
If you have a pre-existing or new medical condition, mental health condition or disability that may require assistance or special conditions to be in place while on your experience, we recommend that you speak with your treating practitioner regarding any considerations that may be important prior to or during your experience. This includes medication requirements and access, options for remote support and documentation requirements for accommodations with your host. Being proactive to arrange accessibility requirements is important to ensure these are in place prior to your arrival.
You are also encouraged to familiarise yourself with your travel insurance policy, and where and how to access health support overseas.
Student Advisers at UQ Student Services and doctors at UQ Health Care can meet with you ahead of your experience to discuss any questions or concerns you may have regarding your health condition and your experience. To make an appointment, please follow the links below.
If you require support for any medical conditions, mental health conditions or disabilities while overseas, there are a number of resources available to you including UQ support mentioned above, International SOS and support available through your host university/organisation.
International SOS
International SOS will offer UQ travellers 24/7 pre-departure medical, safety and security information and advice. International SOS will also provide both routine and emergency assistance when UQ's people are travelling. In addition, International S0S will help UQ locate and confirm the safety of its travellers in times of crisis both domestically and internationally. There is no additional cost to UQ travellers to access International SOS.
To be covered by UQ’s Corporate Travel and Health insurance and access International SOS (ISOS), you must complete the following steps:
- Create an account/register with ISOS
- Create your profile
- Create a new trip and enter your travel details
- Complete the Travel Details (ISOS) form in your workflow in Student Hub and upload a screenshot of your MyTrips entry.
A detailed step-by-step user guide from ISOS is the MyTrips guide.
For further details regarding important steps in planning your travels with ISOS and FAQs, refer to UQ’s page for International SOS.
Insurance
UQ’s global experience participants are covered by UQ’s Corporate Travel Insurance:
- Only in the country of their global experience
- For direct travel to/from the host country for the duration of the program
Students travelling in a country where they also have citizenship may not be covered for medical expenses while overseas or medical evacuation.
