Who are AustCham Hong Kong?

AustCham Hong Kong is the largest Australian Chamber of Commerce, with over 1,300 member companies with interests in Australia, Hong Kong and Mainland China.
They have been providing exceptional internship opportunities for Australian students over many years and are committed to ensuring students have a phenomenal real-world experience with valuable outcomes.

AustCham provide additional educational experiences to students who come on board the program and engage with high level government diplomats, officials, and key industry stakeholders to provide unparallel opportunities for networking and knowledge sharing.

What can I participate in?

AustCham Hong Kong is offering a maximum of 12 students the opportunity to embark on virtual internship opportunity during the 2020-2021 Summer break.

Costs & Inclusions

HKD $8,000 (approx. $1,450 AUD) is the program fee for UQ students. This program fee includes:

  • An internship with one of AustCham Hong Kong's 1,300 member companies
  • Orientation Day to the program to provide you with information on creating an ergonomic set up and guidance and support on how to thrice in your Virtual Internship
  • Host sourcing, matching and assistance with interviews for host organisations
  • Free access to AustCham committee meetings to learn more about the company and experience their workplace and culture
  • Free access to AustCham virtual events throughout your internship
  • Virtual events and webinars designed to support your education, development and learning outcomes of your internship
  • Mentorship check-ins and continued support from AustCham during your internship to provide guidance and assistance where required


When you submit an internship application, you are automatically considered for either:

(1) New Colombo Plan (NCP) Mobility Funding of AUD $1,200. To be considered for the New Colombo Plan Mobility Funding, you must meet the funding criteria. This includes approval from your faculty to receive credit for your experience, which must be confirmed no later than 8 November 2020.

(2) Virtual Short-term Experiences Grant of AUD $750. To be considered you must have uploaded your Host Organisation Acceptance Letter no later than 8 November 2020.

There is no additional application required.

If you have already submitted an application for the Employability Grant for your internship, you will receive an email to advise that your application will be withdrawn and that you may be considered for one of the above grants instead. Please note that you cannot receive two types of funding for the same experience.

Grants are limited and may be awarded by a selection committee on the basis of:

  • academic merit
  • academic progression as provided at the time of application
  • in consideration of other scholarships awarded to the student
  • applicants will be considered for only one grant from the Student Employability Centre per application round

This grant is not guaranteed even if all selection criteria are met.

Students who are due to graduate at the end of semester 2, 2020 will not be eligible for the Virtual Short-Term Experiences grant.


To participate in a AustCham Virtual Internship, you must;

1. Be actively enrolled into a UQ program and courses*,
2. Not due to graduate at the end of the semester of application*,
3. Have a minimum GPA of 4 and a record of steady academic achievement, and
4. Meet all other criteria as outlined by the host organisation.

*Due to the evolving situation of COVID-19, students may be considered for participation in this program if they are not currently enrolled. Students who are due to graduate at the end of semester 2, 2020 are also eligible to apply, although they may be ineligible for UQ Insurance while undertaking their internship. These exceptions are for this round of applications only.

Credit for Internships

Some students may be able to receive credit towards their UQ program pending faculty approval. The Student Employability team is unable to provide further advice regarding internships for credit.
