Gain exposure to the working environment of a Latin American Embassy

The UQ Student Employability Centre, in collaboration with the UQ Global Engagement Office, coordinates a volunteer extra-curricular internship program with a number of Latin American embassies in Canberra over the Summer and Winter breaks. The volunteer internship represents a fantastic opportunity if you have an interest in Latin American culture and society, diplomacy, international relations and business.

The objective of the volunteer internship program is to strengthen relations between The University of Queensland and the Embassy and offer meaningful networking opportunities and experience for students to gain exposure to the working environment of the Embassy.

Winter Program 2018

Dates: Monday 25 June - Friday 13 July (TBC)
Duration: 3 weeks
Participating Embassies: Embassy of Ecuador, Peru, Cuba, Uruguay, Mexico and El Salvador
Location: Canberra, Australia

The duties of the intern may include general office administration, executive support to the Ambassador, consular services, translation, event coordination and liaison with other Latin American embassies.

To be eligible to apply for the Latin American Embassy Internship Program, students must:

  • Be currently enrolled in coursework towards a full degree program at The University of Queensland (eg. undergraduate, honours, graduate certificate, graduate diploma or coursework masters levels of study)
  • Remain enrolled for the duration of the internship (eg. continued enrollment)
  • Undergraduate students must have completed at least one year study and master’s students must have completed one full-time semester or equivalent prior to applying.
  • Not be undertaking the internship during teaching weeks or periods when an applicant is enrolled in coursework (eg. summer semester).
  • Be able to travel to Canberra on the selected dates and organise and fund their own travel.
Selection Criteria

To be considered, you must meet and respond to the selection criteria as outlined in the application form:

  • Required: High academic achievement and an interest in Latin American culture and society, diplomacy, international relations and business
  • Highly regarded: Experience in project and event management and strong Spanish language skills
  • Be able to complete an activity report within four weeks of completing the program.

Please note that this is an extra-curricular activity and the program cannot be used towards course credit and cannot conflict with any exams or teaching weeks.

Each successful intern will recieve a modest grant to assist with the cost of transport to Canberra, accommodation and living costs. Interns will need to fund additional costs associated with the internship, such as transport costs around Canberra, spending money and additional activities expenses. Previous interns have reported that the cost of living in Canberra was much higher than they had anticipated.

The Student Employability Centre recommends that applicants research and consider the associated cost of living and working in Canberra when applying.
