Costs and Funding for Internships
The costs associated with participating in a Domestic, Virtual or Global Internship will vary depending on the individual experience, program inclusions, internship length and whether or not you are receiving credit.
Information regarding the specific costs associated with each opportunity is available on each experience webpage.
UQ Internship Grants
When registering your internship experience with the Internship Team you are automatically considered for funding that is relevant to your nominated experience.
Internship grants should not be a factor when developing your budget and should only be considered supplementary financial support if awarded.
Internship Grants is awarded to enable as many UQ students as possible to enhance their employability through a supported* experience. Funding will prioritise students from underrepresented groups who have never undertaken an enrichment experience.
Grants are based on the availability of funding and will vary depending on duration, learning mode and location of the activity.
Funding is awarded by a selection committee with the following criteria being taken into consideration:

- students from underrepresented groups (students who are First Nations, low SES background, from regional and remote areas and students with disabilities)
- no other grants or scholarships have been awarded either by UQ or external parties for the same experience
- enrolled in My Career Adviser (MCA) or Employability Award
- no funding will be allocated to students undertaking domestic virtual experiences including Practera.
- no grants will be paid to students who have been awarded a grant offered by but not limited to NCP, Westpac, UQ faculties and host institutions
Internship Grant Values
Please note that funding is not guaranteed even if all eligibility criteria are met. Funding should therefore not be a factor when developing your budget.
- Global internship (in-person): AUD$1,500
- UQ Embassy Internship (in-person): AUD$750
- Domestic internship (in-person): AUD$350
*Supported experiences are listed on the Internship website. These are internship providers who have successfully completed UQ’s due diligence process.
New Colombo Plan Mobility Funding
The New Colombo Plan Mobility Funding, provided by the Australian Government, subsidises the cost of participating in for-credit short-term experiences within the Indo-Pacific region.
When you submit your application to the Internships and Global Experiences team, you are automatically considered for this grant, if you meet the NCP Eligibility Criteria.
Applicants will need to submit supporting documentation (host acceptance, bank details) by the deadline indicated on the relevant program information page.
The following experiences are NCP-Supported for Internships:
Administrative and program fees
You are responsible for paying any fees related to the delivery and administration of your internship.
It is important you confirm with your internship provider what is included/excluded in these fees.
Your internship provider will have deadlines relating to the payment of these fees and it is your responsibility to make the payments, in full, by the appropriate deadline.
OS-HELP Loan
You may be eligible for an OS-HELP Loan if your program is for-credit and you meet the OS-HELP loan criteria. OS-HELP Loan applications must be submitted by the appropriate deadline.
Centrelink
If you receive assistance from Centrelink and are completing your overseas internship experience for-credit, you can arrange to continue to receive these payments while you are overseas.
Centrelink requires the following information in writing from UQ:
- your equivalent study load
- the duration of your overseas internship experience
- confirmation that your overseas internship will count
You can request a UQ Global Experience Confirmation Letter from the Internships and Global Experiences Team once you have been officially accepted by your host university.
Please contact Centrelink for more details concerning your eligibility and payments, including if your short-term global experience is not-for-credit.
Travel costs
Flights
You are responsible for researching, booking, and paying for any flights and/or travel associated with the short-term global experience.
Students are advised not to book non-refundable travel until they receive acceptance from the host university and confirmation of their visa.
Visa
You are responsible for researching, applying for, and paying any associated fees required to obtain an appropriate visa for the duration of your short-term global experience.

Insurance
You may have to obtain specific insurance to meet the visa and/or host university requirements for participation in a short-term global experience.
Approved short-term program participants are covered by UQ’s Corporate Travel Insurance. Read the UQ Travel Insurance Policy to identify if you will need to purchase additional insurance.
Accommodation fees
You are responsible for organising and paying for your accommodation.
Internship providers will sometimes provide accommodation options at a set fee or even include accommodation in the cost of the program. For more information, refer to each provider page.
