Returning to UQ

2. Settling back in

To ease your transition into life back at UQ, stay connected and share your experience with other students are considering a semester overseas.

Reverse culture shock

It is normal to experience reverse homesickness for the people, places, and things that you grew accustomed to while on exchange.

Helpful hints

Here are some helpful hints to help you adjust to returning home.

  • Go to an "Unpacking your Global Experience" session organised by Global Experiences.
  • Give yourself time to resettle.
  • Maintain contact with friends you've made overseas.
  • Avoid making comparisons between cultures - all cultures have a mix of good and bad.
  • Join QUEST (Queensland University's Exchange Student Society)
  • Reflect on the important life skills you've gained throughout your exchange.
  • Keep up your foreign language skills! Take a class at the Institute of Modern Languages - UQ.

If you are having a tough time settling back into life in Australia you can contact a UQ student counsellor. Counselling sessions are free for UQ students and confidential.

Sumbit your testimonial

Sharing your experience on exchange is a great way to help other students who are considering a semester abroad. You can share your experience by submitting an online testimonial for your host university.

Share your experience - become a Global Influencer

Help others in their journey towards a global experience and also develop your own employability skills such as leadership, event management and promotions.

The main role of the Global Influencer is to share your personal experiences of exchange with other students who might be interested in going overseas. This might be in the form of:

  • one-on-one chats
  • panel discussions
  • speaking in front of an information session
  • Facebook/Instagram posts
  • videos and other promotional tools

You will never be expected to run an event/activity on your own and a staff member of the Global Experiences Team will always be on hand to answer any question that you don't feel comfortable answering yourself.

No formal committments

The Global Influencer role is something that you can undertake as and when you feel it suits you - there are no time commitments or expectations as we understand that students are busy and have many other commitments.

If you have any questions on how to share your experience, contact Global Experiences.
