Are you ready to take action in your career and make the most out of the upcoming UQ Careers and Volunteer Expo? As part of Employability Week, this expo is a valuable opportunity to connect with potential employers and volunteer organisations, learn about various industries, and explore internship and job opportunities.

To help you maximise your experience, here are some practical tips:

1. Attend workshops beforehand

Throughout Employability Week, a range of online and in-person workshops can help you prepare for the expo. Consider attending:

  • Making LinkedIn work for you – Get your profile up to date before entering the expo

  • Designing Your Life with a Career Action Plan - Map your future path

  • Interview Essentials & Resume Reviews - Sharpen your pitch and polish your resume with personalise feedback

  • Career Path Quest x Industry Networking Event – Practing your elevator pitch in a fun, interactive environment 2. Prepare your elevator pitch

Before the expo, craft a clear, concise elevator pitch that introduces who you are, highlights your strengths, and outlines your career aspirations. A strong pitch helps you make a memorable first impression.

2. Research the exhibitors

Take time to explore the organisations attending the expo. Familiarise yourself with their mission, values, and the types of roles they offer. This preparation allows you to ask informed questions and demonstrate genuine interest.

3. Dress professionally

First impressions matter. Aim for business casual or business professional attire to show you’re ready for the workplace—while still choosing something you feel comfortable and confident in.

4. Bring multiple copies of your resume

Have several copies of your resume on hand. Make sure it is up-to-date, well-organised, and tailored to the industries or roles you most want to explore.

5. Network effectively

Networking is a key part of the Careers and Volunteer Expo. Be approachable, introduce yourself confidently, and ask thoughtful questions. Remember to collect contact details or connect with recruiters on LinkedIn so you can follow up afterward.

6. Consider something different

Take the time to visit some booths that aren’t traditionally connected to your studies or interests. Often organisations are looking for staff or volunteers to meet a range of needs. Chatting with a Not-For-Profit organisation may lead to a surprising career conversation.

7. Take notes

Use a notebook or a note‑taking app to record important information from your conversations. These notes will be invaluable when writing follow‑up messages or preparing applications later.

8. Follow-up

After the expo, send thank-you emails to the recruiters and professionals you connected with. This not only shows your appreciation but also keeps you fresh in their minds.

The UQ Careers and Volunteer Expo is an excellent chance to kickstart your career and expand your volunteering experience. By preparing well, staying organised, and approaching the event with curiosity, you’ll set yourself up for success.
