While exploring potential job or internship opportunities, it's important to understand the ins and outs of the application process. Navigating the application process and meeting the requirements can be challenging, but with the right guidance, you can make a strong impression and increase your chances of success.

Here's a step-by-step guide to help you navigate this first step of your career journey:

1. Research Thoroughly

Learn about the organisation’s mission, values, culture, and the role itself. This helps you tailor your application and show genuine interest.

2. Refine Your Resume

Highlight your key skills, experiences, and achievements—including volunteering or project work. Customise your resume for each application by matching it to the position description.

3. Write a Compelling Cover Letter

Explain why you’re a strong fit and how your experiences align with the role. Address it to a specific person where possible and keep the focus on what you can contribute.

4. Follow Application Instructions

Read the requirements carefully for missing documents, criteria, or formatting requests can cost you the opportunity.

5. Prepare Your References

Select referees who can speak to your capabilities and let them know in advance the role you’re applying for.

Be sure to approach your potential referees politely and let them know they may be contacted.

6. Proofread and Edit

Check for typos, grammar issues, and formatting errors. Polished documents make a strong impression!

7. Follow-up After Applying

A polite follow‑up message shows professionalism, interest, and initiative.

8. Prepare for Interviews or Assessment Centres

If your application is successful, you may be invited for an interview or to attend an assessment centre. Prepare for this stage by researching common interview questions, practicing your responses, and dressing professionally.

9. Seek Feedback

If unsuccessful, don’t let this opportunity to request feedback get away. This is often a missed opportunity to learn how to refine your future applications and continue developing your skills.

10. Keep Records

Maintain a record of your applications, including submission dates, contact information, and outcomes. This will help you stay organised and keep track of your progress.

11. Stay Persistent and Positive

The process takes time. Every application builds your experience to move you closer to your goals.

Navigating the application process and requirements is an essential skill for success in your career. By researching, customising your materials, following instructions, and maintaining professionalism throughout the process, you'll enhance your chances of landing the job or internship of your dreams.
