The Waseda University Short-Term Japanese Program offers 3 week language courses targeted at beginner and intermediate levels. 

The Short-term Japanese Program is organized and run by the centre for Japanese Language Waseda University. The goal of this 3-week program is to cultivate -students’ overall Japanese language ability. Through the classes provided at different levels, students can study the Japanese language according to their own abilities.

Credit Equivalent 

2 Waseda Credits = 2 UQ Units. Maximum of 4 UQ Units if 4 Waseda Credits are successfully completed (pending UQ faculty approval).

Eligibility and Application

All applicants must meet the UQ short-term experience eligibility criteria and the Waseda entry requirements.

The program is aimed at students who can at least read and write Hiragana/Katakana. Waseda advises that students self-study with Waseda's provided learning materials before starting the program.

Students are required to complete a self-check test prior to the application period. Students must enter the scores when processing their application to Waseda University.

Cost

The tuition fee is approximately $1,190 AUD. More information regarding fees can be found on the host university website. 

Applicants may also be eligible for UQ-specific funding. Applicants will be notified by late-October if they are eligible for travel grants and scholarships awarded by the Global Experiences Team. Please do not rely on this funding to support your global experience.

Funding

New Colombo Plan Mobility Grant 

Eligible students are guaranteed to receive a New Colombo Plan Mobility Grant valued at $2,500 AUD when participating in this experience.

When you submit your application to the Internships and Global Experiences team, you are automatically considered. There is no additional application required. Applicants will need to submit supporting documentation (host acceptance, bank details) by the relevant deadline.

When you submit your application for an experience, you are automatically considered for funding that is relevant to your nominated experience. Please refer to the Short-Term Experiences Funding  page for details. 

 

Tsoi Fung - 2019

This experience gave me a chance to made more friends that we all share the passion and interest in Japanese language and culture. The program made me feel more comfortable and confident to speak it out. During this experience, it allows me the learn how to do daily and more local ways to oral speaking skills, other than a textbook style of speaking. I have also learned more gramma and stance structure.

If you participate in a short-term program you may also be eligible to submit an application for an OS-HELP loan if your program is for-credit and you are enrolled as a Commonwealth-supported student.
