AustCham Hong Kong Internship Program
The information below is for programs offered in Winter 2019. Winter 2020 program details will be updated as they become available from the host. Please do not apply to UQ until the updated Winter 2020 information is available and updated.
Hong Kong is labelled as Asia’s world city and it’s surrounded by islands, nature and beauty, as well as the vibrant culture.
The AustCham Hong Kong internship program is an excellent way to gain valuable Asian experience and establish cross-border connections to grow your global network. This program includes a comprehensive orientation plus networking events throughout the internship and in-country support to the interns.

The AustCham Hong Kong Internship matches UQ students with leading Hong Kong-based companies from a diverse range of industries.
Visa Information
It is your responsibility to ensure you have the correct visa for the country where you will be studying. As the Global Experiences Team is not a visa-issuing authority we cannot provide visa advice.
Contact the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Australia for visa and immigration information. Applicants will be notified by mid-May if they are eligible for travel grants and scholarships awarded by the Global Experiences Team. Please do not rely on this funding to support your global experience.
Eligibility and application
All applicants must meet the basic short-term experience eligibility criteria.
This is a competitive program. 10 students will be selected by an internal selection committee from the Student Employability Centre and AustCham in Hong Kong.
All students must complete the Short Term Global Experience online application and upload the following documents as part of that application:
- A Curriculum Vitae/Resume (1 page maximum) that details your program of study and your prior work experience.
- A Cover Letter that addresses why you wish to participate in the internship (1 page maximum).

Cost
Successful applicants will pay HKD$12,000 (approximately AUD$2,300) to AustCham HK, which will cover the cost of:
- Internship placement
- Visa
- Orientation program and introduction to Hong Kong
- Networking events to meet other students and companies
- On-ground support for all interns during their placement
The cost of the internship may be reduced for Hong Kong residents.
Participants will need to cover the following costs:
- Round trip Flights
- Accommodation and meals in Hong Kong
- Personal spending money (e.g. shopping, transportation cost for personal travel…etc.)
Applicants may also be eligible for UQ-specific funding.
Accommodation
Accommodation is not included in the cost of the program.
Insurance
UQ students participating in a Global Experience through UQ are automatically covered by UQ's travel insurance in the country of the Global Experience. Hong Kong citizens returning to Hong Kong for their Global Experience, please note that “Benefits payable under UQ’s travel insurance policy may be reduced if travellers are covered by their home country’s medical benefits/scheme due to residence requirements.”
Some Faculties allow students to receive credit towards their UQ program for internships or other non-study activities. The Global Experiences Team is unable to provide further advice regarding internships for credit. If you are interested in seeking credit, you must contact your Faculty/School directly for more information regarding your eligibility:

Please note: If you are granted permission to receive credit for your participation in an internship program:
- You may be responsible for paying UQ tuition fees in addition to the internship program fee
- You may be eligible for funding provided through the OS-Help loan scheme

- Start Date: 30 December 2019
- End Date: 21 February 2020
*The standard public holidays in Hong Kong during this period are January 01 and January 27 & 28. However, host companies may manage their holidays separate from this.

If you participate in a short-term program you may also be eligible to submit an application for an OS-HELP loan if your program is for-credit and you are enrolled as a Commonwealth supported student.
