Credit for Internships

Some Faculties allow students to receive credit towards their UQ program from internships or other non-study activities.

The Internship Team is unable to provide further advice regarding internships for credit. If you are interested in seeking credit, you must contact your Faculty/School directly for more information regarding the available courses and your eligibility prior to applying to your internship:

Please note: If you are granted permission to receive credit for your participation in an internship program:

You must update the Internship Team at employability@uq.edu.au
You may be responsible for paying UQ tuition fees in addition to any internship program fee.
You may be eligible for alternative funding. Further details can be found on the Financial Support website

Faculty of Business, Economics and Law

Course credit must be confirmed with the BEL Faculty to check suitability for your program requirements. You should consult with a faculty WIL advisor prior to applying.

For an internship to meet the requirements for one of the above BEL placement courses, the internship must meet the below requirements:

You must undertake a placement that is min. 100 hours
If taking the course toward your major, you must have a discipline-specific supervisor (e.g. marketing student would require a supervisor from within the marketing industry)
Your supervisor must be willing to provide a supervisor’s report and relevant feedback for assessment purposes
Your placement must be undertaken within 6 months of the start date of the semester by completing RBUS
Your placement must be appropriately aligned with the course learning objectives, and you must be able to provide an outline of the learning activities for the internship which would be used in the learning agreement between UQ and host organisation.

Faculty of Engineering, Architecture and Information Technology

Credit and professional practice must be confirmed with the EAIT Faculty to check suitability for your program requirements. You should consult with a faculty advisor prior to submitting an application.

Engineering students may be eligible for Engineering Professional Practice. To determine whether your experience is eligible, please review the Engineering Professional Practice website. You will be required to seek pre-approval for any hours. To do so, you will need to email the EAIT Employability Team providing the information of your internship.

Faculty of Health, Medicine and Behavioural Sciences

Credit must be confirmed with the Faculty of Health, Medicine, and Behavioural Sciences to ensure it meets your program requirements. We recommend consulting with the relevant course coordinator before submitting your application.

Internship programs may qualify for Work Integrated Learning course credit (HLTH3001) through the School of Public Health. Please contact the course coordinator of the specific HLTH3001 offering (e.g., Summer or Winter) to discuss eligibility.

Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences

Global Internships participants may be eligible to receive credit or partial units towards a UQ language course (i.e. Japanese, Indonesian). Please speak directly to your Discipline Coordinator - this information is available on the schools website.

UQ Embassy Internship Program participants may enrol in POLS3801 and POLS7521 in Semester 1 and 2 under the following conditions:

Selective entry based on GPA, as per the normal requirements for entry into POLS3801 and POLS7521.
70 hours minimum at the placement, plus 50 hours of self-directed learning for POLS3801.
A meeting (at a mutually agreed time) between the student and the POLS3801 Convenor to discuss the Internship Report after submitting a 1-page Plan for the Report. Note that if the internship is during a mid-semester break, the student will have to agree to have this meeting during the semester when the coordinator is available.
A written Internship Report (4000 words) to be submitted at the same time as students enrolled in the semester course, and graded by the convenor of POLS3801.
A written logbook summarising the nature of activities undertaken during the internship, to be completed regularly during the placement, and to be submitted together with the final Internship Report for POLS3801.
An Organisation and Institutional Context paper (1500 words) on the role of embassies in international politics. This is to be submitted in accordance with the regular schedule of assessments for POLS3801, and graded by the convenor of POLS3801.
A (2000 word) written logbook summarising the nature of activites undertaken during the internship, to be completed regularly during the placement, and to be submitted together with the final Internship report for POLS7521.
A (4000 word) written report to be submitted in accordance with the regular schedule of assessments for POLS7521.

Approval process: Students must email the administrative coordinator and seek pre-approval to undertake either course. In the email, they must confirm that they can meet the requirements for enrolment in the course. Please note: meeting eligibility criteria does not in itself qualify students for enrolment into POLS7521. The School retains final discretion regarding decision making.

Faculty of Science

Credit must be confirmed with the Science Faculty to check suitability for your program requirements. We recommend consulting with the relevant course coordinator/ faculty advisor before submitting your application.

Internship programs may be suitable for Work Integrated Learning course credit through the Faculty of Science (SCIE3050).
