Motivation
To experience different cultures and ways of living.
Personal Development
My experience in Norway greatly developed my independence and problem-solving as I was pushed out of my comfort zone. It was an amazing experience, that has left me with a number of friends spread throughout Europe. Further, I have learnt about many cultures that will help me in further relations and work situations.
Academic Development
I most enjoyed the way nursing placements are completed in Norway. The teachers work with students to create a suitable schedule, they are also specifically paired with one nurse for the entirety of their placement. This allows your nurse to watch you develop and push you accordingly. Also, it means less stress on students as they are given more flexibility on schedules. Additionally, there is significantly less classes/assessments during placement periods, allowing you to focus on your placement for a time period, then completely focus on absorbing your theory. Much preferred it to the way UQ placements/habs courses are delivered.
Professional Development
I would be able to relate to and work with international students and companies better. Additionally, working in different environments and being adaptable is beneficial for my further employment.
Budget
5400kr a month on accommodation. Overall I spent a lot more than expected, maybe close to $20k. But this is because I did a lot of international travel on weekends. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity, so I’d encourage future students to not be afraid to spend money on experiences!
Accommodation
This accomodation was recommended. I had a sink in my bedroom, but shared bathrooms/showers/kitchen with 9 other roommates. I loved this because it MADE me become friends with 9 other Europeans from around the world. We had lots of fun, and we may have never met if I didn’t get allocated to this dorm. To future students, I was nervous about sharing bathrooms, but it ended up really no problem at all. I shared about 3 toilets, 3 showers with 9 people and there was never a time where I had to wait. Also, don’t be scared of living with such a big dorm. When you are in Norway, you have no other friends remember. Also, norweigans are not very easy to befriend (since they have their own lives and friends already there), so other exchange students will become your closest support.
Highlight
100% the international friends I made. My polish roommate is already visiting me to travel Australia in February! I’ve been invited back to my roommates houses in France, Portugal, Poland and Germany, to visit them!
Advice/Top Tips
Try and participate in as much as you can. Even if you don’t like going out, go out a couple times to see the culture and life of the city. Even if you don’t like going on dates, it actually is a way to meet other norweigans! These are some examples, but the main point is make the most of it!!
