Clemence - Lund University

B Engineering (Hons) / Mathematics, Semester 2, 2024
This was a truly amazing experience and I would never have expected to enjoy this quite as much as I actually did.

Motivation

I wanted to participate in an exchange to have the opportunity to travel as well as learn about the different culture at a new university and country. I really wanted to gain a different perspective and meet and work with people from various backgrounds learning from their different point of views and experiences.

Personal Development

This was a truely amazing experience and I would never have expected to enjoy this quite as much as I actually did. I believe I gained a lot from this experience, I definitely developed long-lasting friendships with people from all over the world that I might not have had the opportunity to do otherwise. I think this has allowed me to expand my perspective and learn more about different cultures and different ways of doing the same things. I also was able to travel and see different parts of the world which I believe to have given me a greater appreciation for different cultures and has developed my love for travelling and experiencing new things. Additionally, I think the whole exchange experience has given me perspective and taught me resilience.

Academic Development

Academically I found it very interesting to compare the different university experiences. I found Lund to have much smaller classes which allowed for easier and more active communication with teachers. I found the workload to be more inconsistent than at UQ, the semester was split into two study periods and I tended to have a lot more work in one than the other but overall I found the workload to be lighter than at UQ.

Professional Development

I believe going on exchange really developed my communication skills, I found it to be essential to have the ability to clearly and concisely express things when talking to a variety of people from different language backgrounds. This experience also taught me resilience and adaptability as any challenges that I would face, I would then have to find a way to face them and solve them directly.

Costs and Budget

I kept track of my spendings throughout the semester and had a rough monthly budget, this a bit depending on when I would go travelling as that would cost more. Overall, I spent about $10 000 but I think it would be very easy to spend more than this especially if you regulalry eat out or go travelling, accommodation was about $3 500, food about $2 000, about $300 on transport not inclusive of flights and other transport when travelling. I spent about $3 500 on travelling outside of Sweden.

Funding

I received the Internships and Global Experiences Grant of $1 600 and found it to be extremely beneficial, I put it towards my travels, making the most of my time in Europe and taking advantage of the location I was in to explore new places and really develop my love for discovering new things and appreciating different cultures and traditions.

Accommodation

The Lund University website outlines the different accommodation options. As a UQ student I didn't have guaranteed accommodation through LU Accommodation but applied through it anyway as well as doing applications through different platforms. I ended up getting my housing offer in the second round of offers so would advise future students to apply through LU even without the guarantee and to continue applying through the different rounds as I know people who got their offers in the third or fourth rounds.
I was living in a corridor room with 5 other international students, it was essentially a small apartment, we each had our own room with our own bathroom and shared the kitchen and living space. Some pros of my accommodation was the size, I found 6 people to a corridor to be the ideal amount, it was however one of the further options and wasn't really in the center or near the university.

Highlight

I loved a lot of things about this experience but I would have to say that the main highlights were the long-lasting friendships I made, meeting so many people from so many places, learning about their experiences and appreciating each-other's similarities and differences.
Another highlight would be the travelling I was able to do, being able to see things and go places I would not be able to do from here.

Advice/Top Tips

I would strongly advise to actively participate in things for international students, particularly at the beginning of the semester as that then allows you to meet new people and form those friendships, you should also really make the effort to maintain these connections after all the orientation activities have ended.
