Alexander - Delft University of Technology

Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) and Master of Engineering, Semester 2, 2024
You can be whoever you want to be on exchange, you can try new things, and do what you want to do. So be who you want to be, and enjoy it!

Motivation

I wanted to experience university living in a different country, and meet people from different backgrounds.

Personal Development

I was fortunate enough to make many new friends while overseas, and I miss them all dearly. Additionally, I feel that I developed greatly as an individual, living on my own in a country with nobody that I knew (at first) helped me to develop my confidence and to learn more about what I like about myself and where I am.

Academic Development

I was fortunate enough to attend a very academically prestigious university, TU Delft, and many of the classes I took were very interesting. Most interesting to me were the additional robotics and control courses which I was able to take. These courses were very advanced and I am currently putting what I learnt in them to good use in my masters' thesis.

Professional Development

I feel that my greatest personal development has been my confidence. I feel I am much better able to put my best foot forward and be an advocate for myself. Ultimately confidence and how you portray yourself is an immensely important professional skill and I think that in terms of what will stay with me the longest, this development is the most important [professional] impact of my exchange.

Budget

I made an initial budget before I left, which included travel before hand. But ultimately it was not very detailed, or thorough. At minimum, I would recommend making a weekly spending plan which outlines the minimum amount you should spend a week to live (food, rent, utilities etc). Excel is fine for this.

Funding

I received an OS-HELP loan, and an IGET grant. Both of these funding items went into my general spending pool, and helped support me to do everything from buy food, to travel during my trip.

Accommodation

At TU Delft there is considerably existing infrastructure to find housing, which was fortunate from a practical standpoint. If I could do it again, I would definitely try to find a private rental, rather than the student accommodation I was living in.

Highlights

Meeting people from all across Europe and the world. I found the sharing of different experiences and histories to be so interesting and exciting. The peak of this was the Christmas party our house threw before students went home to their families (those who could).

Top Tips

As cheesy as it sounds, you can be whoever you want to be on exchange, you can try new things, and do what you want to do. So be who you want to be, and enjoy it!
