Rosie - Politecnico di Milano

Semester 2, 2022
Bachelor of Architectural Design

Motivation

My motivation for participating in the semester-based exchange stemmed from a desire to immerse myself in a different cultural context, allowing me to expand my understanding of architecture beyond the familiar. I wanted to challenge my existing perspectives by engaging with new design philosophies, materials, and construction techniques that are unique to the region. Experiencing how architecture is influenced by a place’s history, climate, and social values fascinated me, and I believed this exchange would provide invaluable insights into how to create meaningful, contextually relevant designs. Moreover, I was excited by the opportunity to learn from international experts, collaborate with peers from diverse backgrounds, and bring these global influences into my future work.

Personal Development

My experience has been life-changing. I’ve made lifelong friends from different backgrounds. I’ve gained practical knowledge and insights that go beyond the classroom, giving me a fresh perspective on the world. Being in another culture showed me different ways of living and thinking, broadening my worldview. Exploring new places also sparked my sense of adventure and curiosity. Learning a new language was a rewarding challenge that deepened my appreciation for cultural exchange. It helped me communicate and understand the culture more deeply. Overall, this experience has made me more adaptable, open-minded, and empathetic. It has expanded my global awareness and boosted my confidence in navigating new situations with an open mind.

Professional Development

During my experience, I developed several key skills and attributes that will greatly contribute to my professional development and future employability. One of the most important skills I honed was time management. Balancing a demanding workload while making time to explore the new world taught me how to prioritize tasks effectively and maintain productivity under pressure. I also improved my ability to adapt to new and challenging situations, which will help me stay flexible in a professional environment where things are often unpredictable. In addition, my communication skills improved as I collaborated with peers and sought advice from professors. Learning to communicate clearly and ask for help when needed has prepared me for team-based projects and leadership roles in the workplace. These abilities are invaluable in tackling challenges creatively and making sound decisions in professional settings.

Funding

The funding I received was incredibly beneficial as it enabled me to expand the scope of my experiences in ways I wouldn’t have been able to otherwise. Specifically, it provided me with the opportunity to travel to a wider range of destinations, which significantly enriched my learning and exposure. By visiting more places, I was able to immerse myself in diverse environments, engage with different communities, and experience various cultural, historical, or professional settings first-hand. This broadened perspective not only enhanced my understanding of the subject matter I was focused on, but it also helped me develop a more holistic view of the world.

Advice/Top Tips

Be sure to fully embrace both your academic pursuits and social experiences! Forge meaningful friendships and immerse yourself in the vibrant new culture around you.

Based on my experience, I would strongly advise future students to begin their accommodation search as early as possible to secure the best location and price. Additionally, it's important to thoroughly research the agencies or landlords you're dealing with to avoid potential scammers or unhelpful management.
