Motivation
My motivation for participating in the internship was driven by a desire for cultural immersion and networking opportunities. I believe that the experience would not only enhance my personal and professional development but also provide me with a unique and enriching opportunity to explore a new culture and expand my global perspective.
Personal Development
Working on the overseas market expansion project has broadened my perspective on global business practices and market dynamics. This experience has enabled me to appreciate the diversity of international business environments and has sparked my interest in pursuing further opportunities in global business endeavors.
Academic Development
This internship exposed me to new perspectives and approaches that broadened my academic horizons. Collaborating with colleagues from diverse backgrounds and working in a different cultural context challenged me to think critically and creatively, leading to new insights and innovative solutions that I could incorporate into my academic coursework. Furthermore, it provided me with valuable networking opportunities and industry connections that enriched my academic experience.
In terms of workload comparison, the internship workload was often more intense and demanding than my studies at UQ. While UQ coursework typically involves a mix of lectures, tutorials, and assignments spread out over the semester, the internship required focused and concentrated effort on specific projects and deliverables within tight deadlines.
Professional Development
I felt overwhelmed by the multitude of factors to consider at the beginning and was unsure of the critical points that needed attention for the project at the beginning. Moreover, working in a foreign country exposed me to cultural differences and language barriers, which became evident during meetings and interactions with colleagues. To address these challenges, I took proactive measures to mitigate potential risks and ensure clarity in communication. After each meeting, I compiled minutes of the meeting served as a reference point for me to double-check the accuracy of my understanding and allowed me to seek clarification from my superiors on any ambiguous points. I actively sought feedback from colleagues and supervisors to refine my approach and improve my understanding of the market dynamics. Through this experience, I enhanced my cross-cultural communication skills and adaptability. Working on an international project broadened my perspective and deepened my understanding of global business practices.
Budget
The most significant expense was accommodation, which was comparable to rental prices in Brisbane. For transport and food, I budgeted approximately 10,000 to 25,000 Japanese yen per week. However, if traveling to nearby cities, such as using the Shinkansen (bullet train), the cost could be higher, typically around AUD 100 or equivalent.
I used the funding primarily to cover the costs of renting accommodation in Japan, which was the most significant expense during my time abroad. By allocating the funding towards accommodation expenses, I was able to secure a comfortable and safe living environment near my internship placement.
Highlight
Overall, the highlight of my experience was the combination of cultural immersion, professional growth, and overseas exploration that made my time in Japan unforgettable. It was a transformative journey that broadened my horizons, enriched my life, and left me with cherished memories.
