Motivation

My motivation was primarily to engage in a new cultural experience, see the other side of the world and make new, international friends. Doing an exchange has helped me broaden my mindset about what I want to do in the future by exposing me to experiences outside of Australia.

Personal Development

The experience has helped me make many connections and friends across the world and encouraged me to try new things by putting myself out there in new experiences. I have become more aware of the different lifestyles and day-to-day life of different cultures and become more confident in solo travel.

Academic Development

Academically, I have grown to appreciate the similarities between UK law and Australian law as classes would often cross-reference Australian case law (or other jurisdictions). The academic workload was similar to UQ, but the assessments were more streamlined, with usually a formative piece followed by a single summative assessment piece. This gave me an opportunity to gain feedback directly from the teaching staff and review and revise my studies accordingly. The most challenging aspect, like at UQ, was balancing the academic workload with other social or cultural activities; effecting time management was key.

Funding

I budgeted on a week-by-week basis. The biggest expense by far was the accommodation on campus, followed by transport (airplanes, trains etc.). Since I was staying at catered accommodation, I did not have to worry about food expenses as much as I would otherwise, meaning I only spent money on food when eating out or if I was away from the accommodation. For budgeting, the best thing is to stay on top of it regularly and to consciously be aware of what categories of expenses you are spending the most on.

The funding I received contributed to a portion of the accommodation costs and took some of the stress off.

Highlight

The highlight of my experience was meeting and making many friends that come from across the world. I had the opportunity to travel up to Scotland with friends and do a long hike through the Highlands which was a super enjoyable time. Getting to travel outside of the big cities and tourist spots is very worthwhile.

Accommodation

Researching and planning which accommodation situation you want to do is big as this will be your accommodation for the whole exchange. Budgeting money so that you have the chance to travel throughout different places after the exchange experience.
