There were so many incredible experiences that came from the Employability Award program. Two standout experiences were my student exchange at the University of Manchester and working as a Volunteer Coordinator at UQ Careers Fair.
My time abroad at the University of Manchester was a great experience as it really encouraged me to broaden my horizons. Studying overseas was a really special experience as I got exposure to subjects I wouldn't have been able to study at UQ, gained a lot in terms of honing my communication skills and understanding intercultural communication, and also gained a lot of independence.
Working as Volunteer Coordinator at UQ Careers Fair was an exhilarating, fast-paced experience where I had to think on my feet, got to meet a whole variety of people and became the 'face' of UQ for the day - even featuring on UQ's Instagram story. While it was an exhausting experience, it was really engaging and great to be so pivotal in ensuring an event ran effectively. It gave me important experience in communication, organisational skills and time management, as well as perspective in running an event.
Now that I am nearing the end of my degree, I have already secured a graduate role at Jacobs, an engineering consultancy firm. The Employability Award encouraged me to participate in a wide variety of activities beyond what I would usually consider, and also exposed me to a wide variety of employers, thought leaders and other high-achieving students.
I would particularly like to credit the Icarus Program at the School of Civil Engineering for helping me to determine my career direction. It was when I first participated in this program that I really gained an understanding of where I wanted to move in life, and the subsequent conference was a great opportunity to broaden my horizons and engage in much broader concepts.
I would encourage students to start their participation in the Employability Award early and start talking early. It is never too early to start, and by starting early, it gives you more time to figure out what you like and what you don't like. Even if the award seems like a far off goal now, by doing a little planning and taking some time to understand where you want to go, the Award becomes quite simple and easy to attain.
If you just miss out, it is no worry either - you have still obtained numerous great experiences from the program which put you well ahead of the 'rat race' who are all applying for the same graduate position as you.
