Eligibility for Internships

To participate in a Domestic, Virtual or Global Internship, you must meet a number of eligibility criteria. Make sure you meet the eligibility criteria before applying for your internship.

To be eligible to participate in an internship, at the time of application, you must:

select an experience from the supported experiences list
be actively enrolled into a UQ program and courses
not due to graduate at the end of the semester of application
have completed at least six (6) units at UQ in your current UQ program
have a minimum GPA of 4 and a record of steady academic achievement
agree to UQ's Internships and Global Experiences Terms and Conditions
meet any other published eligibility requirements relevant to the nominated internship

HDR students please be informed that these internship opportunities may impact your progression and eligibility for scholarship. As an alternative, you may want to consider a HDR program embedded placement. You can find out more by attending an information session on HDR placements, or sending an enquiry to the Graduate School.

It is your responsibility to confirm that you meet the eligibility criteria and complete the relevant application procedure with your preferred host. The experience host is responsible for making the final decision on your eligibility to participate in the internship.

Deferred and supplementary exams

If you have been granted a deferred or supplementary exam, you may not be able to participate in a Domestic or Global internship due to date restrictions. Please contact examinations for further assistance.

Global internship implications on semester exchange applications

It is recommended that students do not participate in a Global internship directly before a semester-based exchange. Overseas travel prior to an exchange can negatively impact your ability to obtain a student visa for both a global internship and semester-based experience. In some cases, students may need to choose to only participate in one global experience.

Students who participate in a global internship immediately prior to a semester-based exchange must acknowledge the following:

It is your responsibility to research immigration procedures for your host country/countries.
The Internships and Global Experience Team and the internship provider are not able to expedite the processing of your application, visa documents, or visa application due to impending travel plans.
If you choose to withdraw from either experience, you must contact the Internships and Global Experiences Team to confirm your withdrawal.

Participation in multiple experiences with overlapping dates

The Internships and Global Experiences Team strongly recommend that students choose only one experience to participate in during each application round. Participating and committing to multiple experiences during an overlapping period can be very challenging. If you choose to withdraw from either experience, you must contact the Internships and Global Experiences Team to confirm your withdrawal.
