Motivation
My motivation for participating in this experience was to broaden my horizons by travelling to study in a different part of the world, as well as studying content which I would not usually be exposed to during my degree at UQ.
Personal Development
I had extensive personal development through this experience. This was my first time travelling by myself, and I was doing so internationally, to the UK. Through the travel and subsequently staying by myself for three weeks, I gained confidence in my abilities to travel and live independently, away from my usual friends, family and support systems, which was incredibly valuable to me. I also met some really incredible people who I will keep in contact with, through this amazing experience, I now have friends all across the globe.
Academic Development
This experience also broadened my academic horizons. I was studying AI and Machine Learning, a study area different to my usual degree at UQ in Australia, where I study Public Health. I enjoyed being exposed to different subject content which I would not usually have the opportunity to be, especially over the short intensive period of time. I thoroughly enjoyed the different teaching style offered at Oxford University, with the small, group tutorial classes being a highlight, being able to ask the professor specific questions in a small group format.
Professional Development
I have developed a solid knowledge and understanding of AI and machine learning, which I believe is invaluable to my future work, given that AI will be prevalent in all workplaces into the future. I also developed skills in working within a team of individuals who I have just met, which will be very valuable to my future teamwork endeavours.
Funding
I was lucky enough to be able to access a bursary through my UQ scholarship, meaning that most of the costs associated with my programme were covered. The course costed approximately $8500 and the flights to/from the UK totalled to around $4500. The accommodation and food were included in my course cost, which was very helpful to me when budgeting for this experience. I also received a bursary from IGET, which aided me in paying for any unexpected costs whilst I was away.
The funding I received enabled me to attend the experience. I would not have been able to complete this overseas short term study abroad without receiving funding, as it would have been financially out of reach for me, given the large cost. I used the funding to cover the course costs, which included accommodation and food, as well as aiding in paying for my flights.
Advice/Top Tips
I would say just go for it, this was such an incredible experience and I would do it again in a heartbeat. Throw yourself into all of the activities offered, no matter how silly they may seem, they are so much fun.
Highlight
The highlights of my experience were really the people I met whilst I was away. I met and became friends with some really amazing people who I hope to stay in touch with, the friendships which I formed are unlike any others, given the situation and experiences we shared being away from home. The setting of Oxford University was also amazing to me, and such an incredible place to study.
