Personal Development
I was able to develop my resilience and confidence. Throughout my experience, I faced multiple problems such as public transport strikes or cancellations. In response, I deviated from my original plans, learning to navigate different routes and to understand the German transport system. By being forced to adapt to these inconveniences, my self-conviction improved. Although mistakes were made, I was always able to ultimately succeed in navigating. Thus, my resilience also improved as I practised approaching failure as a normal aspect of life, rather than as a sign of defeat.
Professional Development
I have significantly developed my problem-solving skills. As a foreign citizen, I constantly faced obstacles in daily life. For example, the language barrier impeded communication, I had technical difficulties with my phone when navigating, and got lost multiple times in Berlin and Kassel. Overcoming these problems required flexibility, optimism, and creativity. Effective problem-solving is valuable to my professional development because I can contribute to the efficiency of my working environment, as well promoting adaptability essential for thriving in a constantly evolving socio-political environment.
Accommodation
I found out about my accommodation options through email correspondence with the IWU. I was placed in a host family in a beautiful town with good access to public transport. The home-cooked meals and ability to practise German with a local greatly enhanced my trip. My host, Alicia, was incredibly helpful and was also able to amend any confusions such as the tram systems or cultural customs.
Highlight
The highlight of the experience for me was the friends I made. A few of them are Brisbane residents, allowing me to expand my social circle. I have already made plans to visit friends in America and Korea. It is a wonderful opportunity to meet like-minded people and connect quickly through the unique shared experiences of the program.
Advice/Top Tips
I would advise students to apply, even if they are unsure. I had significant reservations about participating in the experience before I left. However, this is a normal part of stepping out of your comfort zone. I am very grateful I chose to challenge my boundaries because I was able to develop confidence, introspection, meaningful friendships and memories I will cherish for the rest of my life.
