Eligibility & How to Apply

You may be eligible for financial support through a range of UQ grants and funding opportunities. Before submitting your application, please make sure to read the "Check Your Eligibility" section. This includes internship grants that can help fund your experience.

Am I Eligible for a Grant?

The application process involves several key steps that you'll need to complete in order:

Pre-Application

Identify an internship opportunity with your preferred provider/host organisation. If applicable, seek academic approval for course credit or professional practice hours.

Application to Host/Provider

Apply directly to the provider/host organisation and obtain confirmation of internship enrollment. This should include your full name, start/end dates, minimum hours per week, and internship type & location.

Submit Your Registration

Congratulations on securing your internship placement! Now it's time to register with UQ to unlock support and funding opportunities.

Upon registering your accepted internship offer with the UQ Internships Team, you will automatically be considered and assessed for eligibility for the following:

• UQ Internship Grants – Financial support for your experience
• NCP Grant – Australian Government funding available to eligible Australian citizens enrolled in undergraduate programs
• UQ Insurance – Insurance coverage during your internship

What you'll need when submitting a registration - Your official confirmation of internship enrollment from your host organisation, including start/end dates, hours per week, and internship location.

UQ Review & Verification

Once you submit your registration, the UQ Internship Team will verify the details with your host organisation and assess your eligibility for all available support programs. This process ensures you receive the maximum assistance available for your internship experience.

Pre-Departure Requirements

• Complete the Traveller Declaration
• Submit Pre-Departure Confirmation to UQ

During Your Internship

• Week 1: Complete the internship checkpoint form sent by UQ
• Credit-bearing placements: Complete required tasks, assessments, and reports

Post-Internship

• Final week: Complete reflection form
• Last day: Submit final feedback form

Deferred and supplementary exams

If you have been granted a deferred or supplementary exam, you may not be able to participate in a Domestic or Global Internship due to date restrictions. Please contact examinations for further assistance. 

Global Internship implications on semester exchange applications

It is recommended that students DO NOT participate in a Global Internship directly before a semester-based exchange. Overseas travel prior to an exchange can negatively impact your ability to obtain a student visa for both a Global Internship and semester-based experience. In some cases, students may need to choose to only participate in one global experience.  

Students who participate in a Global Internship immediately prior to a semester-based exchange must acknowledge the following:

• It is your responsibility to research immigration procedures for your host country/countries.
• The Internship Team and The Global Experience Team as well as the internship provider are not able to expedite the processing of your application, visa documents, or visa application due to impending travel plans.
• If you choose to withdraw from either experience, you must contact the The Internship Team and The Global Experience Team to confirm your withdrawal.

HDR Students

HDR students may have the opportunity to participate in an internship. However, please note that your participation:

• is extracurricular and outside the scope of your PhD (with implications for annual leave), and
• will not be considered an HDR placement eligible for the Career Development Scholarship Extension
• UQ Internship Grants are not available to HDR students.
