Student voice

Three ways you can have your voice heard

These student voice opportunities are available to all students.  We encourage you to check the specific eligibility requirements for each type.

1. Become a member of a Student Advisory Group

Advisory groups are concerned with a particular topic (e.g. mental health, or promoting community engagement amongst under-represented student groups), and provide advice to UQ governing bodies on those issues.

Committees reach out to advisory groups to get their opinion on proposed policy, and work on their recommendations to implement change at UQ.

Advisory groups can help:
•    contribute to policy-making at UQ
•    learn how governance works at a large scale organisation

2. Contribute to a Focus Group

Focus groups are feedback sessions in which a small group of selected participants are asked to answer questions, discuss topics and brainstorm solutions to existing issues.

These sessions are led by staff or students, and targeted to a certain type of student (e.g. belonging to a particular course, or a certain age, from a particular background) to address concerns specific to them.

Taking part in a focus group lets you:
•    play an integral role in the teaching and extra-curricular development of UQ
•    learn how research and evaluation is conducted in a professional setting.

3. Participate in a student forum

Student forums are events in which members of a student cohort (i.e. of a program, school, faculty) talk to student representatives or staff about their experiences and suggest improvements.

These forums can be a formal panel discussion to talk through specific issues, or a general meeting of an entire student cohort, school, or faculty. They may take place in-person, virtually or in hybrid modes.

Student forums have been effectively used to discuss concerns with students regarding things like course structure, syllabus contents, and even infrastructure changes.

Student forums are useful because:
•    they encourage real-time interactions and provide feedback and solutions at the same time.
•    help build healthier relationships between students and staff members.

About student voice

Student voice platforms are a way to have your say at UQ. Staff and students use student voice to:

  • Share ideas, thoughts and opinions.
  • Elicit feedback on a particular topic.
  • Contribute to the decision-making process at UQ.

Voice platforms can be formal events where staff and student representatives hear student opinion on a particular issue, or they can be an informal lunch which staff use to keep in touch with the student community at UQ.
