My experience

I chose the global experience because I study German and I know that studying a language is enhanced so much by actually being in the country/countries that speak that language.  I studied a German language and culture course and it was truly so worthwhile.  I learned so much about interculturality and I felt so confident in my foreign-language speaking ability by the end of the course because I was sitting in a room with people of all ages from all over the world, discussing my own and other cultures (and their similarities and differences) ... all in German!  I also did a course in German Ecology and the Economy, which was fascinating and gave a great insight into how Australia compares to the rest of the world (and specifically Germany) in those areas.  My German fluency increased very dramatically during the course, which was aided by the fact that all lessons were taught solely in German and I spoke German mainly with the other course participants.

How has the experience changed you?

I met some wonderful people and undertaking the course and associated travel was the best experience of my life. My sense of direction and logistics improved from all the little days trips around the Black Forest region we took. I learned, most importantly, the virtue of being open to people from all cultures and backgrounds as ultimately, no matter where people come from, we are more alike than different as humans.

Favourite memory

My favourite memory would be swimming and stand up paddle boarding in Titisee, a lake in a beautiful holiday town in the Black Forest during one of our excursions.

Top tips

Don't be afraid to splurge a bit money-wise on accommodation, experiences, food and drinks... It is worth it!

Yes, I received a $1000 scholarship as well as an OS Help Loan for $6667 (or thereabouts).  The funding paid almost entirely for my short-term global experience, and for this I am truly grateful.
