Sruthi - LSE Summer School: Session 2

Bachelor of Economics/Laws
July 2018

My experience

Having heard about the summer school from friends who had gone in previous years I could not wait to apply myself. I undertook the course EC260 The Political Economy of Public Policy which allowed me to obtain credits towards my Economics degree. I found it very worthwhile towards my degree as it was a side of Economics and political decision making that I had not yet encountered in my studies at UQ and the course was made relevant to many parts of Economics not simply politics and policy. It was so easy to make friends in the course and I ended up with a great group of friends to explore London with and hang out with in between classes. The experience of studying overseas is so different to UQ that I cannot recommend it enough.

How has the experience changed you?

I gained so much from LSE, there was the learning that took place in the actual course but more than that it is how a summer school allows and in some respects forces you to talk to new people and make friends quickly because everything is done at such a fast pace. Additionally the experience allowed me to see so many new places and immerse myself in a variety of different cultures while travelling.

Favourite memory

My course involved an essay as the mid session assessment, so after submitting that it was a great feeling to go celebrate with all my new friends that I had made over the last week or so and it was a night where we all became even better friends.

Top tips

I would highly recommend this program for anyone who can't manage to fit in a whole semester exchange. It is a reasonably relaxed application process with plenty of help available at all stages making ending up at LSE a breeze. I am so glad I went and will tell everyone they should do the same.

I was lucky enough to receive a travel grant of $1000 which I was incredibly grateful for as it allowed me to plan a few extra weeks of travel prior to the LSE course starting as there is a gap between end of semester 1 and starting the course there. The grant allowed me to create even more memories on my short term global experience.
