Stephanie - Queen's University

B. Business Management / Arts
Semester 2, 2015

Academic experience

I studied Marketing Management and Strategy (COMM333), Sales Management (COMM434), Marketing Ethics (COMM338), and Service Strategy (COMM343).

I enjoyed that the classes were smaller and run like seminars more so than lectures. I found it extremely beneficial to learn in that environment where classes were interactive and there was an expectation to read up on the theory before class and the brush up on it and apply it in class. I found that Queen's was far more practical in their teaching style than UQ's theory based approach.

Personal experience

I gained friendships, got the chance to travel all along the East Coast of Canada, and gained invaluable knowledge and skills that I can utilize within my marketing profession.

Accommodation

I lived on-campus. What I enjoyed most about this experience were the people I met and the friendships I formed.

I would recommend applying for college and Co-Op housing, however, I would also reconsider buying the Meal Plan. It would have been more efficient and cost-effective for me to have bought ingredients and cooked my own meals throughout the semester.

Budget

I ended up spending approximately $15,000 on housing, food, travel, and other extraneous expenses. Therefore I would recommend budgeting at least $10,000 before going on exchange.

Professional development and employability

All of my classes were extremely beneficial in contributing to my professional development. The Smith School of Business was exceptional and the courses were all taught well by all the professors. I feel as though this academic experience will have set me ahead of my peers.

Highlight

Travel, friends, and the University itself were all highlights for me.

Top tips

  • I would recommend saving up as much as possible in order to be able to enjoy the experience and travel without needing to worry about running out of funds.
  • I would also recommend researching the country and place you are travelling to so that you can make the most of your experience and don't miss out on anything.
  • Finally, I would highly recommend staying with fellow students in order to enhance your social experience and build friendships and a support network while overseas.
