My experience

I decided to complete the Komstudy short term experience in Tokyo because I felt that it would complement my Japanese studies by giving me a chance to apply my language skills in a real-life setting. As well as this, the short term experience provided the opportunity for me to visit Japan for the first time and explore Tokyo and surrounds with my host family, Japanese students from Komazawa university, and UQ students also completing Komstudy.

How has the experience changed you?

Over the course of the three week program I was immersed in the Japanese language and culture, particularly when living with my host family. This allowed me to develop more cultural understanding, which is invaluable when learning a language. My Komstudy experience greatly improved my Japanese by giving me constant opportunities to practice and learn, which I feel will benefit me in my studies back home at UQ and will in turn enhance my employability. As well as improving my language ability, the short term experience was also an opportunity for me to meet new people and make contacts in Tokyo. I talk regularly with my host family and many of the Japanese friends I made, and it is great to know that I will be able to see them when I visit in the future.

Favourite memory

Without doubt, my favourite part of the trip was becoming friends with the other UQ students on the trip. Although it may sound cliché, the experience really would not have been the same without them. We were a small group that became close in a very short space of time, and it is safe to say that the activities we did in Tokyo wouldn't have been half as fun without them. Whether it was visiting the Meiji Jingu Shrine, experiencing Tokyo Disneyland, exploring Asakusa, or simply participating in our daily Japanese language classes, I was glad to have all of them completing the experience alongside me.

Top tips

I would encourage any student considering participating in Komstudy to go for it! It really is a once in a lifetime experience, and you should make the most of the opportunities available to you while you're at university. It's the perfect chance to improve your Japanese language skills, make new friends, and experience all that Tokyo has to offer!
