O to 4 Mentor Program

What did you wish you knew when you started uni? Use your unique lived experience to help new students.

This pilot program aims to give our first-year students a helping hand to get started by linking them with an experienced UQ student who will guide them through O-Week to Week 4.

As an O to 4 Mentor, you will create a friendly and supportive environment to assist students with navigation, goal setting, getting started at UQ, social connection and introduce them to their Faculty and School. Mentors will utilise coaching and positive modelling strategies to build mentees’ sense of belonging at UQ.

If you have completed your first year at UQ you are eligible to apply to be an O to 4 Mentor. 

Why you should participate

The program provides a valuable professional development opportunity where you can:

  • Inspire and make a difference in the wider UQ community.
  • Develop your interpersonal, leadership, teamwork and communication skills.
  • Get hands-on experience utilising real coaching strategies
  • Receive recognition from UQ in a variety of forms, including ongoing training and professional development, contribution to the UQ Employability Award and team events.
  • Build university-wide networks and showcase your personal initiative and commitment through experiences that add value to your CV.


Mentors will be asked to fulfil the following duties:

  • Be available for a maximum of 3 hours of contact time a week from Semester 2 O-Week to Week 4
  • You will be required to attend the O-4 Mentor Induction which will provide training in coaching and positive role modelling strategies
  • Maintain agreements to meet in-person with your mentee if mutually agreed on between mentee and mentor
  • Contribute to the development and enhancement of the program by providing constructive feedback
