NEXSTEP: Virtual Internships

NEXSTEP was voted 2017’s most innovative internship program by goabroad.com for its Virtual Internship Initiative. As companies transition to remote work structures, it is clear that our work reality has changed and the lasting impact of how work will be conducted online makes a virtual internship experience life-changing and future-ready for the next generation of leaders.

What can I participate in?

NEXSTEP offer a range of virtual internship opportunities over a wide array of sectors across the Indo-Pacific region in the following fields:

Application Instructions

All applicants must meet the UQ Internship Eligibility Criteria and any other criteria as outlined by the host organisation. Students are required to apply to both UQ and NEXSTEP via the buttons below.

  1. Submit an application to the Internships and Global Experiences Team and
  2. Submit an application to NEXSTEP

Students will receive access to their Internships Workflow once their application is approved by the Internships and Global Experiences Team.

Costs & Inclusions

Program fee is AUD $1,200. This includes a deposit of approximately AUD $630 or USD $400. 

Eligible UQ students have the option to pay either the application fee at the time of application or instead a deposit when your application is ready to proceed to the placement matching process. Please use the code ‘UQVIRTUAL’ on your NEXSTEP application form if you prefer the latter.

This cost includes:

  1. Guaranteed Authentic Tasks or Projects with a team of 2-3 in an Asian-based company
  2. Minimum 24 hours per week of remote work-based experience
  3. Resume Review
  4. Interview Preparation
  5. Personal Branding Workbook
  6. Comprehensive Gateway Orientation
  7. Weekly touchpoints
  8. Personal NEXSTEP Program Advisor
  9. Monthly Cultural & Employability Speakers Sessions
  10. Network with students & professionals
  11. Letter of Recommendation & a Learning Outcomes Report

New Colombo Plan Mobility Grant

Eligible students are guaranteed a New Colombo Plan Mobility Grants valued at $1,200 AUD for NEXSTEP: Virtual Internships for China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, The Republic of Korea,Singapore, Thailand & Vietnam.

When you submit your application to the Internships and Global Experiences team, you are automatically considered. There is no additional application required. Applicants will need to submit supporting documentation (host acceptance, bank details) by the relevant deadline.  

This grant is not guaranteed even if all selection criteria are met. Students who are due to graduate at the end of semester 2, 2023 will not be eligible for this grant. 

Funding

Funding is not guaranteed even if all selection criteria are met. Funding should not be a factor when developing your budget and should only be considered supplementary financial support if awarded. 

Applicants will be considered for only one grant per application round.

Internships and Global Experiences Grants

When you submit your application for an internship, you are automatically considered for funding that is relevant to your nominated experience. Please refer to the Short-Term Experiences Funding page for details.

Credit for Internships

Some students may be able to receive credit towards their UQ program pending faculty approval. The Global Experiences Team is unable to provide further advice regarding internships for credit. If you are interested in seeking credit, please refer to the Credit for Internships page for more specific details
