The Mitacs Globalink Research Internship is a competitive initiative available to undergraduate students from around the world.

The program is highly sought after, attracting several thousands of applications each year.

The UQ Student Employability Centre together with UQ Global Engagement will be nominating and funding one UQ student to participate in the program.

Students are provided with professional skills training and gain valuable knowledge about Canadian industry and innovation. Interns interested in returning to Canada for graduate studies will be eligible for a Globalink Graduate Fellowship.

Students can read the full information on the Mitacs Website but will need to apply to The University of Queensland directly in order to be nominated.

In 2017, there will be over 45 universities across Canada hosting Mitacs Globalink Research Interns.

Successful applicants participate in a 12-week research internship under the supervision of Canadian university faculty.

The internship runs for 12 weeks to begin between 1 May 2017 and 1 July 2017 and end no later than 30 September 2017 unless otherwise approved by Mitacs.

Interns will work a minimum of 40 hours per week unless otherwise agreed upon with the Supervisor.

Please note that successful candidates will be required to seek approval from their faculty prior to accepting an offer to represent UQ at this internship. It is your responsibility to make arrangements to seek approval for deferral or other special arrangements, and this may not be available in all programs.

To be eligible to apply for the Mitacs Research Internship, you must:

  • be an Australia citizen or permanent resident
  • have completed at least two years (four semesters) of an undergraduate degree at The University of Queensland at the time of the internship
  • be currently enrolled in an undergraduate degree program at the time of application
  • have a minimum of one semester and a maximum of three semesters remaining in your program after the internship
  • have a minimum GPA of 6.0 (distinction or equivalent)
  • be able to spend 12 weeks (between June and September 2017) at a university in Canada on a research project related to their area of interest and expertise
  • demonstrate oral and written fluency in English or French, depending on the primary language of the project as indicated by the professor at the host university

How to apply

Applications have now closed for the 2017 program.

When applications open, you will be required to submit an online application via StudentHub, responding to the selection criteria listed above and uploading a Resume. Shortlisted candidates will also be required to attend a face to face interview.

The Mitacs award covers the full 12-week period of the internship and is made up of a contribution by Mitacs (7500CAD) and The University of Queensland (6000 CAD), through the UQ Advantage Office and UQ Global Engagement.

The offer will include:

  • Reimburse return airfare from Australia to Canada (maximum of CAD1500);
  • Provide a living stipend of CAD200 per week;
  • Ensure that the student receives Canadian medical insurance;
  • Provide reimbursement of immigration permit application fees (as required to participate in the research internship – up to a maximum of CAD 155);

  • Pay, or provide reimbursement of, any student fees charged by the Canadian host institution.

Mitacs’ funding policy does not allow funds in advance of the student’s internship start date and arrival in Canada. On arrival in Canada with a valid immigration permit, you will receive the first payment instalment from Mitacs. You will be responsible for opening a Canadian bank account, following Mitacs’ instructions, in order to receive funds once in Canada. The scholarship amount is not intended to cover all costs, and you must be willing and able to fund additional costs to cover flights, accommodation and general living expenses.
