The KGU Intensive Japanese Language and Culture Program allows you to study Japanese language and culture at Kwansei Gakuin University in Nishinomiya, Japan.

The program aims to develop Japanese communication skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening, and to deepen understanding of Japanese culture. The program offers a variety of cultural learning opportunities - in addition to the regular language classes, students will also be able to engage with Japanese culture through participation in Japanese Culture Study classes, traditional arts and other cultural activities including a fieldtrip to a historically rich place like Kyoto.

This program offers a variety of course levels in Japanese language including Beginner, Elementary and Intermediate. The content will cover language and culture studies, lessons with KGU student volunteers and field trips. For more information go to the host university's website and the host program brochure.

Credit Equivalent

2 credits = 2 UQ Units. Maximum of 2 UQ Units if 2 credits are successfully completed (pending UQ faculty approval).

Eligibility and Application

All applicants must meet the short-term experience eligibility criteria and any additional eligibility criteria set by KGU

If you are intending to undertake your experience for-credit, it is strongly recommended that you submit your application to IGET at least 4 weeks before applying to the host to allow sufficient time for Faculty to complete the credit assessment. Please note however that it is your responsibility to meet the host application deadline.

Successful applicants will be nominated to the KGU by UQ  following the application deadline. Selected students will be required to submit an online application to KGU directly. We will contact you with further information regarding the application process following the nomination outcome.

Costs

The participation mode of this experience is Study Abroad. The program fee is approximately $2,060 AUD and includes all cultural activities and fieldtrips, accommodation and some transport.

Accommodation

Accommodation in an International Dormitory or Homestay is included in the program fee. More information regarding accommodation options can be found on the host university's program brochure. 

Funding

New Colombo Plan Mobility Grant 

 

Eligible students are guaranteed a New Colombo Plan Mobility Grant valued at $2,500 AUD when participating in this experience.

When you submit your application to the Internships and Global Experiences team, you are automatically considered. There is no additional application required. Applicants will need to submit supporting documentation (host acceptance, bank details) by the relevant deadline.

If you participate in a short-term program you may also be eligible to submit an application for an OS-HELP loan if your program is for-credit and you are enrolled as a Commonwealth supported student.
