Develop your analytical, critical thinking, and communication skills with a research experience.

The Summer Research Program provides UQ students with an opportunity to gain research experience working alongside some of the university’s leading academics and researchers.

All successful Summer Research Scholars will receive a scholarship for the duration of their research (between 6-10 weeks).

1. Check your eligibility

The Summer Research Program is open to undergraduate (including honours) and masters by coursework students, if you:

  • Are currently enrolled at UQ at the time of application and will remain a full-time enrolled student at UQ for the duration of the research program (i.e. not graduating in Semester Two, 2019)
  • Are studying for a degree relevant to the research discipline; and
  • Have a high level of academic achievement during your undergraduate degree.

All Summer Research placements are awarded competitively, and role allocation is decided by the faculty, school, research centre or institute where the research is undertaken. We strongly recommend that you contact your preferred supervisor before applying to discuss the project and ascertain if they will support your application.

All interested students must submit an application by the published closing date.

Summer Research Scholars will receive a Summer Research Scholarship equivalent to $360 per week (paid as two lump sums during the program). The period of eligibility for scholarship payments is up to 10 weeks, generally commencing in mid-November and concluding in mid-February. The funding is not normally paid during periods away from the University, such as during the Christmas break.

Summer Research Scholarships are awarded based on academic merit, motivation for participation in the program, and the enrolling units' nomination. To be eligible for the scholarship, scholars will also need to meet the following conditions:

  • Participate in the program between mid-November and mid-February
  • Participate in the program for 6 weeks or more
  • Work a minimum of 20 hours per week

Please refer to the full eligibility in the Summer Research Guidelines. Please note that these guidelines are subject to change.
