Students interested in international development will work directly with Social Entrepreneur Corps field professionals and social entrepreneurs in Ecuador to help establish new and grow existing micro-consignment supported businesses.

The U21 Social Entrepreneur Corps in Ecuador programme builds on our U21 institutions’ expertise in social entrepreneurship, online and blended learning, international collaboration and service learning, as well as on our common commitment to global citizenship.

The UQ Student Employability Centre will nominate and support up to two UQ students to participate in the program as an extra-curricular program (not for credit).

UQ will pay the program fee, which will cover:

  • Accommodation
  • Most meals
  • Tuition
  • Airport transfers

UQ will also award a $1,500 travel grant which is paid directly to the student, which is intended to assist with costs associated with flights and visa costs.

If successful, you will be covered by UQ corporate travel insurance for the duration of the program, however, will be required to fund any additional travel costs, as well as some of your own meals, visas, insurance for personal travel and living expenses.

Please note that this is likely to be in excess of $1500.00AU.

The SEC Program funding is extra-curricular if students wish to apply for credit for this program they are not eligible for program funding through the UQ Student Employability Centre.

Please note: While UQ will nominate students to participate in the program, applicants will be required to complete an online application through University of Connecticut's application system, including a two-page essay detailing their motivation, experience and expectations in relation to the program. Skype interviews will also be conducted.


To be eligible to apply for the U21 SEC Program, you must:

  • Be currently enrolled in an undergraduate program (undergraduate or honours) at The University of Queensland and remain enrolled for the duration of the program;
  • Be in at least your second year of study (ie. completed at least 6 units of credit) at the time of application, with no Academic Progression Warning(s) within the last 6 units);
  • Have a minimum cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 4.0;
  • Complete an activity report within four weeks of completing the program;
  • Be able to travel to Ecuador on the program dates, and be able to coordinate, book, and pay for your own flights and travel;
  • Be in the position to fund some of your own meals, travel insurance for personal travel, airport transfers and personal living expenses;
  • Students holding an international student visa are responsible for seeking advice and approval related to returning to their country of citizenship;
  • Students going on exchange in the semester following the U21 program must make their own arrangements for a student visa (if required), and acceptance into a U21 program will not give priority to processing of host institution acceptance documents. Students also need to be aware that they may need to apply for their student visa in Australia and to be available to attend a face to face interview;
  • Agree to be photographed and interviewed for promotional purposes.
